Ukemi waza and the spine
By Corrado Listro

Nothing in the natural order of the universe is random. Our existence is not mere "luck." The primary assumption is that a universal intelligence, ki, God, is in all matter and continually gives to it all its properties and actions, thus maintaining it in existence. To think that the universe is devoid of intelligence is like thinking that the great pyramids of Giza were the result of an accidental rock slide!

By deductive reasoning, I believe that this order and intelligence apply to every part of the universe, including the coordination and function of the human body. The brain was formed to support the body's phenomenal functioning. The nerves are the tissue of choice for communicating and coordinating all the tissues, organs and systems of the body.

The major highway of the nervous system is the spinal cord supported by 24 movable bones. If these come out of place because of negative forces (trauma or stress), our health is endangered, and if this situation is not corrected, it will lead to decay and pain.

The body's innate intelligence (ki) is fully aware of these misalignments. How does correction take place? An outside force is required. During ukemi waza, the body welcomes the force that has been generated and swiftly, efficiently, lovingly guides the distorted bone to the right place.

It is the infinite technique of neutralization! Aikido is a terrific way to promote and allow optimal spinal health.
