The poem below, submitted by Ramin Arvin, comes from
The Dhammapada--a collection of the sayings of the Buddha (563-483 B.C.E.). Dhamma means law, justice, righteousness,
discipline, truth; pada means path, step, foot,
foundation. These writings have become the principal scripture
for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Better than a thousand hollow words Better than a thousand hollow verses Better than a hundred hollow lines It is better to conquer yourself Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, Better than a hundred years of worship, To revere such a man, Better than a hundred years of mischief Better than a hundred years of ignorance Better than a hundred years of idleness Better to live one day Better to live one hour Better to live one moment |
